Trichinella murrelli is the primary zoonotic species in wild carnivores in the United States, having been identified in several species of omnivores and carnivores. Here, we document its occurrence in seven of 21 (33.3%) red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes ) from six counties in Pennsylvania. Encysted Trichinella juveniles were detected in muscle squashes (< 5 g samples) of all seven foxes, and in histological sections of the tongue and limb muscle of three. Juveniles from muscle squashes were pooled and tested in a multiplex PCR capable of differentiating all Trichinella species native to the USA; all samples contained only T . murrelli . This is the first identification of T . murrelli in red foxes from Pennsylvania, and the first such survey performed in the last three decades. Results indicate that Trichinella remains endemic in Pennsylvania wildlife and a threat to the health of those who consume wild game. It is unusual for wild wolves to associate or interact with people, linger near buildings, livestock, or domestic dogs, but it does occur especially in areas of high wolf densities in and around rural communities. This type of behavior may be more prevalent in areas where wolves are not legally harvested. This “bold” behavior is more typical of a habituated or food- conditioned animal, a released captive wolf, or a released wolf-dog hybrid. The scale and scope of wolf depredation on livestock depends on local wolf density; numbers and kinds of livestock; livestock husbandry practices; availability and vulnerability of alternative prey; human density; road density; severity of winters; and local hunting pressure. In many instances, wolves live around livestock without causing damage or only occasional damage. Wolf pack size has been shown to increase the likelihood of depredations on domestic animals, with larger packs more likely to cause damage. Most losses occur between April and October when livestock are on summer pastures or grazing allotments. Cattle, especially calves, are the most common livestock killed by wolves. When wolves kill sheep or domestic poultry, often multiple individuals are killed or injured. As of 2019, stable wolf populations exist in many regions in the U.S., including Alaska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, with growing populations in parts of Oregon and Washington (Figures 19, 20). Wolves have recently been documented in northern California and northwestern Colorado. A small population of introduced Mexican wolves exists in Arizona and New Mexico, and a small population of red wolves exists in eastern North Carolina. Both the Mexican and red wolf populations are considered more vulnerable to extinction than other North American wolf populations.

Abstract The American black bear (Ursus americanus, Figure 1) is a challenging species for wildlife agencies to manage due to its size, intelligence, extensive range, food habits, and adaptability, as well as societal views. In North America alone, agencies receive more than 40,000 complaints about black bear annually. Black bears are known as ‘food-driven’ animals, meaning most conflicts result from a bear’s drive to meet its nutritional needs. Not surprisingly, an overwhelming proportion of conflicts are related to their use of anthropogenic (human) food sources, such as garbage, bird food, and crops. Understanding what drives human-bear conflict is the first part of good management. Methods to manage human-bear conflicts can be grouped into two general categories: proactive and reactive. Proactive management attempts to change human behavior and prevent conflict, or keep it from recurring. Examples of proactive management include removing attractants, education and awareness, and exclusion. Conversely, reactive management attempts to change bear behavior or results in the lethal removal of the bear. Prior to any management action, there are important factors that managers and homeowners should consider. First, many of the methods described herein are only permissible to licensed personnel, such as state and federal biologists and wildlife managers. It is up to the individual to know which strategies are legal by reviewing local laws and agency websites. Also, it is important to note that any action plan should consider the side effects of the action and include a system for monitoring efficacy (short and long-term reactions of the bear). Documenting the season, time of day, type of conflict, and any information about the bear(s) involved is important for monitoring results. A scientist from Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England has identified seven previously unknown species of a distinctive frog-like insect. The insects belong to the genus Batracomorphus , a group of leafhoppers. Dr. Alvin Helden discovered the new species while conducting fieldwork in the tropical rainforest of Uganda. The…A scientist from Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England has identified seven previously unknown species of a distinctive frog-like insect. The insects belong to the genus Batracomorphus , a group of leafhoppers. Dr. Alvin Helden discovered the new species while conducting fieldwork in the tropical rainforest of Uganda. The name Batracomorphus comes from Greek and means "frog-shaped." These leafhoppers are usually green and have large eyes. They move by jumping with long hind legs that sit alongside their bodies, giving them a frog-like appearance. Details of Dr. Helden's findings were published in the journal Zootaxa . The discoveries represent the first new Batracomorphus species recorded in Africa since 1981. Before this study, scientists had identified only 375 species of Batracomorphus worldwide, with just two documented in the United Kingdom. All seven newly discovered species were collected using light traps in rainforest areas more than 1,500m above sea level in Uganda's Kibale National Park. How Scientists Confirm New Leafhopper Species One of the most difficult parts of the research was proving that the insects represented species that had never been documented before. Leafhoppers in this genus appear almost identical externally, making visual identification extremely difficult. To distinguish them, scientists must examine the insects' genital structures. This is the only reliable way to tell species apart. Leafhoppers reproduce using what scientists call a "lock and key" system. In this process, the male genitalia act as the key and have a unique shape that fits only with the corresponding female structures of the same species. These intricate structures are made from the same durable material as the insects' exoskeleton. Because of this precise match, successful reproduction occurs only between members of the same species, preventing hybridization. Why Leafhoppers Matter to Ecosystems Dr. Helden, an entomologist and member of the Ecology, Evolution and Environment Research Centre at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), said: "Leafhoppers are beautiful, endearing creatures. Although some can be pests, and are associated with crops such as maize and rice, overall leafhoppers are a really undervalued group of herbivores. "They are an important source of food for birds and other insects, and their presence is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. "Finding these new species has taken a lot of painstaking fieldwork in the rainforest, dealing with heat and humidity, but it is incredibly satisfying to find species previously unknown to science -- it makes all the hard work worthwhile. "I've named six of the leafhoppers, in Greek, after their distinctive features or where they were found. One, Batracomorphus ruthae , carries a very personal meaning. It honors my mother, Ruth, who I lost in 2022. "Ruth was a scientist, who worked in a hospital laboratory. She bought me my first microscope, which I still have, and encouraged my love of science from the very beginning, so naming a species after her feels like the most fitting tribute I could give."
