Being willing to learn is a critical attitude for everyone involved in wildlife damage management. Since wildlife damage management intersects so many other disciplines, no single person can be an expert in all of them. In addition, the arrival of an invasive species, changes in building practices (e.g., egress windows, ridge vents), or the implementation of new regulations can confound traditional practices and require new control methods. Thus, it is important to provide a resource that provides detailed, updated and accurate information. Since the publication of the 1994 Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage handbook, there has been a remarkable increase in the volume and quality of information related to wildlife damage management. The rise of the digital age has empowered people to transmit their knowledge and ideas in writing, pictures, and video. A few decades ago, local, state, and federal government wildlife biologists were the primary practitioners of animal control and damage management. Private pest management firms involved in vertebrate animal problems were primarily limited to the control of urban birds and commensal rodents. This situation has changed substantially since the 1990s. The nuisance wildlife control industry has matured. The increased involvement of the private sector in wildlife control unleashed the creative forces of entrepreneurs in the development of new techniques and products. Until the mid-1980’s, most scientific information about wildlife damage management was scattered in articles in academic jounrals (e.g., Journal of Wildlife Management), “grey literature” (i.e., unpublished reports and conference proceedings), and government documents (i.e., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Forest Service publications). Since then, wildlife damage management research has achieved greater prominence as demonstrated by the addition of new outlets and changes in publication policies. The emergence and rapid growth of the nuisance wildlife control industry has supported development of several trade magazines, association newsletters, listservs, bulletin boards, and numerous websites. A few decades ago, relevant research papers only numbered a few hundred a year, now computer search engines return thousands of hits, putting a premium on effective search strategies to obtain information. Digital copies of papers of are often available at no or nominal cost. The volume of information related to wildlife damage management is now enormous. In this publication, we have highlighted important works to supplement the sources found in the various publications of the Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series. In addition, we have focused on information resources that are easily obtained, used primarily for the North American audience, and published since 1994. The findings,…A sweeping new study led by a researcher at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa reveals that almost every forest bird species in Hawaiʻi can transmit avian malaria. That widespread ability to spread infection helps explain why the disease shows up nearly everywhere mosquitoes live across the islands. The findings, published February 10 in Nature Communications , detected avian malaria at 63 of 64 locations tested statewide. These sites included forests with very different mixes of bird species. The illness is caused by the generalist parasite Plasmodium relictum and has played a central role in the steep declines and extinctions of native Hawaiian honeycreepers. "Avian malaria has taken a devastating toll on Hawaiʻi's native forest birds, and this study shows why the disease has been so difficult to contain," said Christa M. Seidl, mosquito research and control coordinator for the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, who conducted this research as part of her PhD at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "When so many bird species can quietly sustain transmission, it narrows the options for protecting native birds and makes mosquito control not just helpful, but essential." How Avian Malaria Harms Native Birds Avian malaria attacks red blood cells, which can lead to anemia, organ failure, lower survival rates and, in some species, death. The consequences have been severe for Hawaiʻi's iconic birds. Studies show that ʻiʻiwi, also known as the scarlet honeycreeper, face a mortality rate of about 90 percent if infected. The ʻakikiki, a honeycreeper native to Kauaʻi, is now considered extinct in the wild largely because of the disease. Many infectious diseases rely on just a handful of species to keep spreading. This research shows that avian malaria operates differently in Hawaiʻi. Most forest birds, whether native or introduced, are at least moderately capable of infecting southern house mosquitoes, which serve as the disease's primary vector. Even birds carrying very small amounts of the parasite were able to infect mosquitoes. That means a wide range of bird communities can maintain ongoing transmission. "We often understandably think first of the birds when we think of avian malaria, but the parasite needs mosquitoes to reproduce and our work highlights just how good it has gotten at infecting them through many different birds," Seidl said. Chronic Infections Drive Ongoing Transmission Researchers examined blood samples from more than 4,000 birds across Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui and Hawaiʻi Island. They paired those field data with laboratory experiments to measure how readily mosquitoes became infected after feeding on birds. The results showed that native and introduced birds often had similar levels of infectiousness, meaning both groups contribute to spreading the parasite. The study also found that birds can carry chronic infections for months or even years. During this extended period, when birds may appear only mildly infected, they remain capable of passing the parasite to mosquitoes. The researchers estimate that this long-lasting, low to moderate infectious stage accounts for most transmission statewide. Climate Change Shrinks Safe Havens The parasite's ability to infect many bird species likely explains why avian malaria is so widespread across Hawaiʻi. The findings suggest that few mosquito-infested habitats remain free of transmission risk. Conditions are becoming even more challenging as warming temperatures allow mosquitoes and avian malaria to expand into higher elevation areas that once served as refuges for vulnerable native birds. Seidl and the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project are members of Birds, Not Mosquitoes, a collaboration of academic, state, federal, non-profit and industry partners working to advance mosquito control in support of Hawaiian bird conservation. The Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project operates under the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit in the College of Natural Sciences. All birds in the study were captured and handled by trained ornithologists under state/federal permits.

Foster Abstract Introduction Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of mammals caused by bacterial species of the Brucella genus. The reservoir for disease is typically mammals, with species of Brucella found infecting amphibians, bats, and marine mammals. Brucella spp. can pass directly to humans through contact with infected animals or their products. Brucella spp. can cause chronic debilitating infections in mammals, including humans, and is associated with spontaneous abortions in infected animals, causing reduced fecundity. In Hawai‘i, terrestrial species that could harbor Brucella spp. include swine, cattle, horses, and axis deer among others. The numerous feral swine in Hawai‘i are known to carry Brucella suis , with evidence supporting infections in cattle. Brucella suis also poses infection risk to humans, dogs, and potentially horses across the state. Methods In this study, 3,274 feral swine serum samples collected from 5 of the 8 main islands over a 15-year span were analyzed for exposure to B . suis . Of the 558 watersheds in the state, 77 were sampled as part of this effort. Spatial analysis was used to identify watersheds of concern. MLVA and whole genome SNP analysis was used for molecular epidemiological analysis. Results Statewide seropositivity rates were triple that of feral swine found in the conterminous United States. Smoothed positivity rates were highest on Maui, followed by O‘ahu, and the island of Hawai‘i. Island-by-island analysis found high brucellosis positivity levels associated with specific watersheds and agricultural areas. Local spatial autocorrelation identified hot spots on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i. MLVA analysis of available B . suis from Hawai‘i found molecular epidemiological connections with B . suis found in French Polynesia and the mainland US while differing from those in Tonga, Western Polynesia. Strains from Hawai‘i are phylogenetically closest to strains from the United States. MLVA and SNP analysis found B . suis strains from Hawai‘i fell into the genetic group that contains biovar 1 B . suis . Discussion This work identified islands and watersheds of high brucellosis seropositivity in feral swine of Hawai‘i, highlighting the magnitude of the zoonotic risk. Introduction of strains in recent history is unlikely due to modern animal trade and disease control practices. Genomic analysis of strains in Hawai‘i and the Pacific area can provide hidden historical and local clues to brucellosis epidemiology in the state.
