Overall, the results of this study indicate that certain peridomestic species could pose a biosecurity threat to poultry operations in some situations. In addition, this study and field reports indicate that the HP AIVs circulating in the U.S. during 2022–2024 may have an extremely broad range of species that can be impacted by and/or replicate and shed these viruses. Abstract Many people enjoy wildlife. It enriches their lives in many ways. Nationwide, Americans spend over $144 billion annually on fishing, hunting, and wildlife-watching activities. However, wildlife is not always welcome in or near homes, buildings, or other property and can cause significant damage or health and safety issues (Figure 1). In one study, 42% of urban residents reported experiencing a wildlife problem during the previous year and more than half of them said their attempts to resolve the problem were unsuccessful. Many people who experience a wildlife conflict prefer to resolve the issue without harming the offending animal. Of the many options available (i.e., habitat modification, exclusion, repellents) for addressing nuisance wildlife problems, translocation— capturing and moving—of the offending animal is often perceived to be effective. However, trapping and translocating wild animals is rarely legal nor is it considered a viable solution by wildlife professionals for resolving most nuisance wildlife problems. Reasons to avoid translocating nuisance wildlife include legal restrictions, disease concerns, liability issues associated with injuries or damage caused by a translocated animal, stress to the animal, homing behavior, and risk of death to the animal. Hard release: A release method that simply turns a captured animal loose at a release site. The animal is not allowed to acclimate to the new environment and no additional resources, such as food, are provided. Homing: An animal’s ability to return to the location where it was originally captured following translocation. Reintroduction: Releasing captive bred animals into a wild population, especially with reference to threatened or endangered species. Also used by state fish and game agencies to describe management activities that restore a native species to its formerly occupied habitat or range. Relocation: To move an animal or family group from one location within its home range to another location within the same home range for the purpose of resolving a human-wildlife conflict. For example, a squirrel caught in an attic would be relocated to the backyard of the same home. Soft release: A release method that involves an animal being maintained in an enclosed area or pen at the release site for a period of acclimation before release. After the animal is released, it may be given additional assistance, such as food provisions at or near the release site. Translocation: The intentional capture and release of animals to the wild to establish, reestablish, or augment a population. Often synonymous with restock, augment, supplement, or reintroduction, especially from captive breeding efforts, but does not apply to nuisance wildlife or wildlife damage management situations.

The observation, captured by a trail camera, is the first photographic documentation of grackle predation in any of the three piping plover breeding populations. This behavior adds common grackle to the suite of egg predators and has critical implications for this shorebird species, particularly in the Great Lakes region where piping plover is listed as federally endangered and common grackles are relatively abundant. Given that current nest protection efforts rely on exclosures with openings that enable access by grackles, we recommend (1) identification of piping plover nesting locations across the Great Lakes region that are frequently used by common grackle, and (2) subsequent alteration of exclosure use (e.g., omission to prevent cueing by grackles or possible structural modification to prevent access) and/or habitat or predator management at locations where grackles are particularly problematic. In addition, increased deployment of trail cameras at Great Lakes sites will help elucidate the extent to which common grackle predation of piping plover nests is a population-wide threat. Abstract The muskrat ( Ondatra zibethicus ) is a common, semi-aquatic rodent native to the United States (Figure 1). It spends its life in aquatic habitats and is well adapted for swimming. Although muskrats are an important part of native ecosystems, their burrowing and foraging activities can damage agricultural crops, native marshes and water control systems, such as aquaculture and farm ponds and levees. Such damage can significantly impact agricultural crops like rice that rely on consistent water levels for growth. Muskrats also cause damage by eating agricultural crops, other vegetation, and crayfish, mussels and other aquaculture products. Loss of vegetation from muskrat foraging can impact marsh viability and habitats for other species, including waterfowl. Habitat restoration often takes years, negatively impacting fish and wildlife. Economic losses due to muskrat damage in Arkansas, California, Louisiana and Mississippi likely exceed most other states combined, primarily because of the vast amounts of productive marshlands and types of crops (i.e., rice, fish, crayfish and vegetable crops) grown in those states. The 16 subspecies of Ondatra muskrats in North America are widely distributed (Figure 6). They are found from northern Mexico to northern Alaska, and most of northern Canada.
